What is ’23 Kilos Down’?
23 Kilos Down is both an aspirational journey and an ongoing way of life.
It began as a simple desire to lose weight, and became a quest to overcome my demons and live an altogether healthier way of life.
It encapsulates what I aspire to achieve, how I have learnt to come to terms with myself and who I am, and how I am striving to live a little bit healthier each and every day.
And one of these years, I will actually end up 23 Kilos Down…!!
The Key Tenets of 23 Kilos Down:
exercise
I know, I know, it can be hard, but you have to do it. Getting active is going to have so much of an effect on your everything, from giving you energy to accelerating your weight loss.
diet
This is the key to it all. What you put in your mouth is ultimately going to dictate whether you end up losing weight or not. It is just hard to stop sometimes…
alcohol
However much you drink, if you are serious about losing weight, you will need to rationalise the booze. This could be harder than you think…
mindset
Lasting change cannot happen without changing your fundamental mindset. 23 Kilos Down is about unlearning and relearning all the things you have always taken for granted, and done without question.
What can ’23 Kilos Down’ do for you?
Changed eating habits
I could never have imagined fancying a salad, let alone actively picking one, but it feels so nice not to crave stuff that is bad for you. Eating healthily is amazing – it pack in the nutrients, and you feel full of life, rather than heavy, tired and stuffed. No more food comas!
Greater self-awareness
Do you even know why you eat half the things you eat? Have you ever thought about why you overeat? Have you ever wondered what drives you to order or make (and consume) far too much?
Focus on Health
There are other things to think about when you start to focus on your health. That extra weight could be costing you much more than just smaller clothing sizes. Better eating means better health, in every way.

Where did it all start?
On 21st August, 2017, I hit my heaviest registered weight ever – 113.6 kilos. It was just after my summer holiday, when traditionally I go more a little bit crazy, but this time I had really gone to extremes.
We had been to Greece, and as I do every year, I had made the most of two weeks of fine eating and drinking by the seaside, and frankly, I was as fat as butter.
But it wasn’t just that. Two weeks of holiday can’t change a person’s shape and weight so fundamentally – you don’t put on that much weight in such a short time. The real problem was the years of constant abuse that had gone on before. I had been piling on weight relentlessly, without even realising. Until finally the time came that I decided to do something about it…
The tip of the iceberg
The thing was, and little did I know it at the time, that was only the tip of the iceberg. I don’t know what I was thinking now, but somehow I thought I could just diet the once, and quickly, fit into a ‘slim’ template and be done with it, and go back to living my life. Ha! It is comic now to even read this, and gosh, what a long way I had to go.
A looong journey…
The truth is, I had a huge journey ahead of me, and one which, I now understand, will never end. I can’t go back to how I was, I have changed, so even if I wanted to, I wouldn’t be able. I have found a new, and better, way of life, fuelled by great knowledge of myself, and why I do things.
A world of change
Along the way, I have changed fundamentally. I have essentially rewired myself.
Of course, this change doesn’t all come without side effects. I have had to stop visiting ‘all you can eat’ restaurants, and nights out aren’t much fun when you’re not drinking. And ice-cream in the summertime… let’s not even go there.
But what did I achieve?
- I changed my tastes
- I changed my natural choices
- I actually changed the food I desire and crave
- I changed how I feel about food
- I changed how I feel about overeating
- I eradicated the desire to ‘pig out’
- I changed how I feel about alcohol
- I have pretty much given up drinking
- I eradicated completely any desire I have to drink too much or get drunk
- I learnt a HUGE amount about myself and my motivations
- I learnt a HUGE amount about my own behaviours
- I understood a HUGE amount about what drives me and why I do things
- I have come to terms with who I am, what I do, and most importantly, why I do it.
